Why Should I Update My Firmware?
It is important to update the firmware (also called “flashing the ROM”) as part of regular maintenance when On Board Systems makes important changes and upgrades. In addition, specific firmware updates helps to keep the system performing optimally. Firmware updates are created for, but are not limited to, the
following reasons:
- To provide critical problem fixes that ensure system stability, such as upgrades that may prevent system unresponsiveness and other issues that could put the system at risk.
- To correct product issues, such as ROM or processor functionality.
- To improve system performance or make the system more serviceable
On Board Systems has developed a simple method for updating the firmware.
What is firmware?
Firmware is a software program that is stored in Read-Only Memory (ROM). Firmware is responsible for the behavior of the system when it is first switched on and for passing control of the components to the operating system. When referring to the firmware on the board of the system, it is called the System ROM or the BIOS. System options have firmware that can be updated. For the purposes of this paper, it will be referred to collectively as “firmware.”
How Do I Update My Firmware?
Once a firmware update is available, the next step is to install the update onto the system. OBS has one method for updating firmware, making the process easy. The following paragraphs discuss updating the firmware and provides information on how to perform the update. Currently, there is one method for updating firmware on OBS systems.
Your firmware update will depend on the system you are using. On Board Systems has released two products for the EDR family and your system is in one of these categories. Your Data Recorder uses either a Speaker or has a LED (Light Emitting Diode) for notification. If you are unsure which system you are using please call us for support.

Instructions:
Choose the model of system you are using.
Follow the link to the firmware folder where you will find firmware and command files for your system.
There are four files which must be put onto your SD card:
FIRMWARE.EDR - Standard firmware update
FWSYSTEM.EDR- Standard firmware update for internal backup firmware
FMTSDINT.EDR - this file tells the system to FORMAT the internal SD card.
FMTSDEXT.EDR - this file tells the unit to FORMAT the external SD card. After the format is complete, CONFIG.EDR will rewritten to the SD card or you may recreate your configuration file.
All of these files need to be copied to the root directory on the external SD card. When the are copied, the system will perform the upgrade and/or format.
The actual process requires several reboots of the device, so you need to leave the card in for a couple of minutes.
The sequence your system will perform is to:
1. Boot up and read CONFIG.EDR
2. Process FIRMWARE.EDR file and reboot
3. Process FWSYSTEM.EDR file and reboot
4. Process FMTSDINT.EDR
5. Process FMTSDEXT.EDR
6. Write out config, and reboot
7. Start normal operation
After you have the files saved to your desktop you will need to have the Secure Digital (SD) Card available.
1. Unlock the SD card by lifting the tab on the side which will unlock your card
2. Insert your card into the computer (cancel any windows which may pop up
3. Make any backups of the folders and events on your SD card you wish to keep
WARNING:
This update WILL Format your SD Card and WILL remove all data from the card. Be sure to save any important files to your hard drive before formatting the card. Ignore errors which may occur.
4. You will now need to open the ZIP file and extract the files to your SD Card:
FIRMWARE.EDR
FWSYSTEM.EDR
FMTSDINT.EDR
FMTSDEXT.EDR
5. The final step is to insert your card into your vehicle and the system will upgrade to the new firmware.
